  • 36 degree 4 cylinder Turbo Offenhauser Engine

  • Aluminum Monocoque Chassis

Winning the 1969 Indy 500, Mario Andretti was always a threat at Indy. In 1974, he arrived at the 500 driving this Viceroy Gurney Eagle (Chassis # 74-06). Gurney Eagles were the popular choice that year as they made up 17 of the 33 car starting field.

The 1974 Indy 500 ushered in a wave of safety innovations following a very tragic 1973 Indy 500 that saw incredible speeds and deadly crashes. 1974 saw substantial safety improvements to the track, also wings of the cars were reduced in size, and pop-off valves were added to the turbochargers in order to help reduce speeds by reducing horsepower.

Andretti flexed some muscle on pole day, when he qualified this Eagle with a four lap average speed of 186.027. The lap landed Mario in the middle of the second row with fifth on the grid.

Andretti piloted this Eagle throughout the 1974 season and even drove it to a 3rd place finish at the USAC National Championships in Phoenix, Arizona. The Andretti driven eagle has been kept by the current owners for over 30 years, and has never before been offered at auction.

It underwent a complete restoration to the original Indy 500 specs. Underneath the Viceroy decaled body you will find the original 36 degree 4 cylinder turbo Offenhauser engine producing 1000 plus horsepower.

The car has anchored the collection of the current owners for over 30 years. The original Aluminum Monocoque chassis still houses the original 4-speed Hewland LG500 MkII Transaxle. Not to mention at the four corners are the original Eagle-cast Magnesium wheels.

Mario’s racing resume is absolutely stunning. Not only did he win the Indy 500, but he also captured the 1978 F1 world championship, 1967 Daytona 500, and was a four time IndyCar champion. This Mario Andretti raced Eagle could easily anchor the collection of some lucky buyer.

Very rarely do you see a Mario Andretti racecar arrive at Auction. Don’t miss your opportunity to own a legitimate racecar that Mario himself drove at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sold on a Bill of Sale.
